We are seeking a motivated and talented Research Assistant with a background in using rodent models of disease to join the Centre for Motor Neuron Disease at Macquarie University. The lab focuses on testing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as spinocerebellar ataxia and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) using cellular and animal models (zebrafish and mice).
You will be a motivated and organised researcher who takes initiative when completing research project tasks and demonstrates attention to detail and quality in your work. You enjoy working with animal models and always obey animal ethics guidelines. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. You are skilled in performing data analysis and are competent in using MS Office, data management and statistical analysis packages.
The Centre for Motor Neuron Disease is well integrated into the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Sciences, has established state-of-the-art research facilities and offers outstanding development options including an active Early Career Researcher support network (‘EnCouRage’). The lab offers excellent research opportunities in a team of >70 staff working on MND.
The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences has active research programs in biomedical, translational and health services domains, with current areas of strength including neurosciences (especially motor neuron disease, neurological rehabilitation, and the clinical neuroscience of pain), cancer medicine, and vascular science, amongst others. The Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health, and patient safety. In learning and teaching, the Faculty offers a unique suite of capability-based medical educational programs aimed a post-graduation subspecialty medical education and training, and a unique three-year extended masters-level, professional-entry Doctor of Physiotherapy degree.

To be considered for this position, please apply online by submitting your cv and a separate (2-page maximum) cover letter that demonstrates how you meet the following selection criteria:
Bachelor’s degree (Honours) or higher in science, medical science or related discipline
Demonstrated experience performing mouse model research including behavioural testing, husbandry and handling.
Knowledge of cellular biology and protein chemistry techniques including Western blotting, immunocytochemistry and microscopy.
Exposure to molecular and cellular biology techniques e.g. injections and microscope imaging, preferably with the use of zebrafish and cell culture models.
Demonstrated success contributing independently and within a team to research, preferably in a PC2 or QC2 laboratory
Knowledge of and demonstrated understanding of neuroanatomy
