WEAR, OH WEAR DOES THE INTERVIEW GO?

Albert Isaacs,

I recently heard a talk given by charity-shop volunteer. One of her jobs was to fit-out long-term unemployed women with free clothing that was suitable for wearing to job interviews. She spoke abut the change of personality and the sense of pride that usually accompanied a change of clothing, particularly in ladies who were usually forced to wear what could only be described as rags.

Not only do nice clothes have an affect on the wearer but, in an interview situation, those conducting the interview usually make a note of the trouble and effort made by those applying for a job. Obviously, this applies to anyone being interviewed, not just those referred to in the first paragraph.

The clothes that everyone, male and female, are expected to wear to an interview are usually a couple of notches up from the type of clothing that you will be expected to wear, should the interview be successful and you join the same company's work-force.

Ninety-nine percent of people realise that, when attending an interview they should be neat and tidy, clean and with well-groomed hair and trimmed fingernails.

It is important that one gives the interviewee the impression that you will fit into the existing work situation and, virtually without exception, this certainly excludes not wearing outlandish facial jewellery and covering-up any tattoos. Of course, these rules apply to both men and women. (The only exceptions would be for those applying for jobs in the pop music world and allied industries.)

Once you've been in the job for a week or so, you should be able to reassess the situation and, therefore, may consider that you'll be able to get away with wearing outlandish clothes; things such as eyebrow rings or rings through the lip; and you may also decide to bear tattooed arms. Nevertheless, never forget that different rules apply to the interview where the guiding principle should always be: modest.
