CSIRO offers an opportunity as a Science Leader in Communications and Signal Processing to a Senior Principal Research Scientist of international standing. This science area in our ICT Centre focuses on the manipulation and processing of signals as applied to communication systems such as algorithms, protocols, coding and system architectures for the efficient transmission and recovery of information. It also covers the broader area of techniques for analysing signals and systems in general such as filtering, identification, classification, and detection. Analog and digital signal processing techniques are key to the development of new radio systems able to adapt to different environments, increased requirements for throughput and demands on available spectrum.
As Science Leader you"ll work closely with the Chief Scientist in shaping the future of the core research activities within the ICT Centre and bring to the team a history of innovation. You"ll develop and nurture professional skills in the science as well as the pursuit of excellence. A team player, you are meticulous and ethical in your science, and creative in the generation of new ideas.

Specifically the role will involve:
Lead and promote communications and signal processing research which underpins the projects undertaken by research laboratories within the ICT Centre.
Lead small focused teams to undertake rapid investigation of a number of research projects with the aim of identifying new scientific directions.
Actively participate in projects underway in the Research Laboratories, either through project leadership or direct participation as a team member.
Work with other Science Leaders to develop excellence in science and engineering research practice in the ICT Centre.
International Science leadership as demonstrated through membership of international conferences and editorial boards.
To be considered you will:
Possess a PhD in engineering computer science or a related field.
Have a substantial record of research leadership in communications and signal processing.
Be active in the communications and signal processing research area with extensive publications record and a high profile in the international communications and signal processing community.
Have a track record of student supervision.
Be able to demonstrate collaborations across universities, research institutions and industry

Position Description
Support for the Position:
A dedicated postdoctoral fellow (three-year term).
Funding for international travel for attendance at key Communications and Signal Processing conferences and/or meetings (funding to be negotiated).
The role of Science Leader will involve the following key duties:
Research:
Lead and promote Communications and Signal Processing research which underpins the projects undertaken by research laboratories within the ICT Centre and more broadly across CSIRO.
Lead small focused teams to undertake rapid investigation of a number of research projects with the aim of identifying new scientific directions.
Actively participate in projects underway in the Research Laboratories, either through project leadership or direct participation as a team member.
Work with other Science Leaders to develop excellence in science and engineering research practice in the ICT Centre.
International Science leadership as demonstrated through membership of international conferences and editorial boards.
Research Staff:
Lead a team of world class Communications and Signal Processing researchers.
Participate in recruitment processes and projects as required to ensure we have strategic processes in place to attract:
- Postdoctoral Fellows
- Visiting Scholars
- PhD scholarship students
- Summer Vacation Scholars
Professional & People Development:
This includes:
Partnering with Project Leaders in setting and reviewing annual performance objectives of staff in the Research Laboratories.
Working with research staff to develop their careers.
Implementing processes to mentor staff that will result in improved technical skills and research capabilities.
Encouraging participation in professional activities and promoting good science citizenship globally.
Collaborations:
Assist the Chief Scientist and the Research Directors and (where appropriate) Theme Leaders to identify partners for scientific collaboration both inside and outside of Australia, which are consistent with the strategic objectives of CSIRO.
Assist in the implementation of these collaborations through joint research activities.
Publications:
Publish research results in the leading journals and conferences. Encourage researchers in the Centre to publish high quality papers and oversee the quality of such publications.
Project Leader:
Where opportunities exist, lead research projects, providing appropriate reporting, supervision and outcomes.

Selection Criteria

Pre-requisite:
A PhD in engineering, computer science or a related field with a track record equivalent to a full professorship or associated professorship.
Essential:
Proven record of internationally recognised achievement Communications and Signal Processing research area demonstrated by an extensive publication history, significant citation to this work by other researchers and history of academic or industry awards.
Proven engagement and leadership within the international Communications and Signal Processing research community as demonstrated by memberships of editorial boards, PC positions held, conference organisation, scientific standing, fellowships etc.
Proven track record in obtaining funding from government agencies, as well as from the private sector.
Proven track record of active collaboration with Universities and industry.
Proven record of successful collaborations either across disciplines or between organisations.
Proven record of research leadership as demonstrated by leading projects, generation of new ideas and successful research outcomes including technology transfer for commercial or public benefit.
Respected scientific leader with a current track record in supervising vacation, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and facilitate development of research staff.
Demonstrated understanding of intellectual property and patent creation, management and licensing.
Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of EEO and OH&S.
NB: For the Science Leader role CSOF 8 you will need to supply additional information and address the following criteria:
Publication of at least thirty journal papers of which ten or more have been published in the last five years. it would be highly desirable to have over forty journal papers or an average of three journal papers published per year.
Demonstrated distinction at the national and international level in research and scholarship and a history of successful research leadership in one or more areas. Measures of international recognition include fellowship of learned societies, best paper awards and prizes, invitations to speak at international specialist meetings or other institutions, and demand for visitors to work with them.
Record of science citizenship and involved in editorship or membership of editorial boards of international journals, major conference organisation and leadership of a learned society activity.
Demonstrated major impact on an area of science through successful project involvement, publications, patent applications, grant applications and recognition by peers.
Proven track record in obtaining funding from government agencies, as well as from the private sector.
