The Xstrata graduate program is designed with the aim of developing balanced and creative individuals with an enthusiasm for site work and the opportunity to apply and develop core disciplinary skills as a critical path to their career development.
Our two-year graduate program provides a collaborative environment and a constant learning curve. Your program will be based on the real job requirements of the sites, as well as your individual development needs. You can expect to undertake at least two placements, either at an open cut site, underground site or head office.

Xstrata Coal is the worlds largest producer of export thermal coal and a significant producer of coking coal.
This strong market position is a result of carefully planned growth, following Xstrata plcs acquisition of Glencore International AGs Australian and South African coal business in March 2002 and its acquisition of M.I.M. Holdings in June 2003.
Today Xstrata Coal has interests in over thirty coal mines located in Australia and South Africa and employs around 10,000 people, including contractors.
Across these global operations, there is a total commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, with Xstrata Coal allocating significant resources to training and management systems to ensure a best practice approach to safety at all times. Parallel to this is an unwavering focus on meeting its environmental commitments.
With a complementary mix of underground and open cut mines which produce thermal, coking and semi-soft coal products, Xstrata Coal is Australias leading exporter of thermal coal and South Africans third largest coal exporter. The company produces, on a managed basis, in excess of 70 million tonnes of coal each year, of which more than 50 million comes from Australia.
Xstrata Coal has positioned itself with a diverse geographical distribution of production between South Africa (23%) and Australia (77%), with the Australian operations further diversified between New South Wales (44%) and Queensland (33%). This strategic split of operations enables access to both the Pacific and Atlantic export coal markets. The export market represents around 90% of Xstrata Coals customer base, with the Australian and domestic markets the remainder.
