PURPOSE OF ROLE (In one sentence - why does the role exist?)


Position seeks to evaluate FWE wines and main competitors using Sensory Science techniques in order to improve or maintain the quality of our wines and gain competitive advantage in the marketplace.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


 

Design, oversee and execute sensory research projects.
Manage existing internal panel database and train new panellists.
Analyze and interpret sensory data utilizing complex statistical techniques.
Evaluate impact of packaging, production, winemaking, viticultural practices on sensory characteristics and quality of FWE wines.
Provide management with reports to identify areas of improvement.
Assist in Benchmarking and Consumer Research projects.
Assist with the development and tracking of departmental expenses and budgets
Review Sensory Science literature and related publications to develop/create new sensory methods.
Oversee and create internal sensory SOP (standard operating procedures)
Supervises Sensory Part Time Help.


 
Difference panels:
•  Coordinate with internal clients (quality assurance, research and winemaking) to follow up with on-going sensory research, and implement new research projects in a timely manner.
•  Design, set up and oversee difference panel testings.
•  Analyze results using FIZZ sensory software. Incorporate new FIZZ features and program updates. 


Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (Q.D.A.)  Panels
•  Design and setup descriptive panels using Fizz software.
•  Act as Panel Moderator and run scoring sessions.
•  Export data to the Tragon Program. Analyze and interpret descriptive analysis data using Tragon, Fizz and XLSTAT software programs.
•  Assist in Report preparation for management.
 


Winemaker Panels and Competitive Bench Testing
•  Assist in organization, setup and design of Winemaker panels and Competitive Bench Testings.


 
Training new panellists

Attract new potential panellists to join the sensory program
Setup and run training sessions.
Ongoing training for existing tasters.
Set up and organize tailored training sessions for special projects as needed (Cooperage, cellar, etc)
 


Sensory Laboratory Organization and other duties.

Obtain wines for competitive benchmark studies, ship consumer test wines to other locations 
Prepare aroma standards and chemical solutions for tastings.  Keep wine defects library current. 
Screen all wines for cork defects, assist in bench testing of research, production , quality assurance and competitive wines.
Maintain and oversee wine and lab/office supply inventories.
 


Consumer Tests

Assist in set up & running Rhine House Consumer Panels (when needed).
Ship and track wines sent to CLT locations (domestic and international).
Prepare shipment/customs paperwork
Oversee and coordinate wine shipments to FWE international and domestic locations (UK, AUS, US, Asia)
 


Training and supervising part time assistants in set up of sensory tests

Supervise and mentor sensory part time help including development of sensory computer programs, test execution and maintenance of internal panels.
Supervise and train summer interns (when needed)
 




QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, experience and/or abilities required.


 
Qualifications/ Memberships:
 
 
 

 
•  Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Psychology, or Statistics with an emphasis in Sensory Science or equivalent experience.


 
Experience:
 
 
 
 
 

 
•  Three or more years of sensory science experience required.
•  Strong analytical  and organizational skills
•  Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•  Prior experience working in the food, beverage, or wine industries with branded consumer packaged goods desirable.
•  Proficiency with statistical analysis techniques (Univariate and Multivariate Analysis)
•  Knowledge of sensory data collection software.
•  Must be team oriented, with excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
•  Previous experience managing people.
•  Demonstrated ability to supervise or motivate others; to work independently or in a team.
•  Ability to contribute to a positive work environment by behaving and communicating in a manner that works positively with clients, customers, co-workers and management.

•  Managing sensory database and choosing panel members for specific sensory evaluation projects.
•  Assess quality assurance and research (enological, viticultural) issues/research request and communicate to management research results and decide if further research is needed.
