Systems Modelling and Uncertainty Quantification
The Institute for Waters Futures (IWF) and the Mathematical Sciences Institute (MSI) are seeking to appoint an exceptional early- to mid-career applied mathematician who is passionate about water management and has the ability to develop, test and apply innovative quantitative methods for handling of uncertainty in systems modelling, notably through uncertainty quantification (UQ). The successful applicant will be expected to teach and lead an innovative research program in alignment with both the MSI and the IWF research agenda. Our ideal candidate will demonstrate their ability to work in a highly collaborative manner and be enthusiastic about engaging widely across disciplinary boundaries and into industry, government and community sectors.
Position overview
The Research Fellow/Senior Fellow will lead a program of work to develop, test and apply innovative quantitative methods for handling of uncertainty in systems modelling and water management, notably through uncertainty quantification (UQ). The successful candidate will be expected to develop the research program in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of researchers within the Institute for Water Futures (IWF) and engage closely with government and industry. This collaboration will work on developing an advanced, interdisciplinary understanding of the complex nature of our water resource systems, adaptive options for water resource futures, and positive contributions to the policy and practice of water management.
The successful candidate will be a member of the IWF and the MSI and will provide a research linkage between members of both the IWF and MSI. We envisage the candidate working with mathematicians from the MSI on the mathematical and computational foundations of UQ and Systems Modelling, and working with members of the IWF in the application of these UQ and System Modelling techniques to Water Futures projects.
The Research Fellow/Senior Fellow should have skills in areas such as System Modelling, Uncertainty Quantification, Optimization under uncertainty, Sensitivity Analysis and Dimension reduction. Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team is essential, with a commitment to achieving external impact. A track record of work on uncertainty will be highly desirable, including familiarity with multi-level/multi-fidelity techniques, the development of surrogate models, uncertainty quantification, propagation, and visualization. Excellent computational mathematics skills are essential. Experience engaging with government and industry partners is highly desirable, especially in the water sector, as well as experience in the application areas of water modelling or economics modelling.
The successful candidate will be offered a continuing or tenure track appointment at the Academic Level B or Level C (which equate to the positions of Assistant/Associate Professor within the United States of America). The level of this appointment, Academic Level B or C, is to be determined by the appointee’s current research and teaching expertise.
The Institute for Water Futures (IWF)
The Institute for Water Futures (IWF) is an interdisciplinary Institute operating across three colleges, three schools and two institutes at the Australian National University (ANU). The IWF brings together experts from sciences, social sciences, humanities and public policy from across the ANU and has established research partnerships with CSIRO, state and federal water agencies, and other research organisations.
About the Mathematical Science Institute (MSI)
The MSI is one of the leading mathematics departments in Australia.  Ranked first in Australia and 31st in the world in the 2019 QS World University Rankings by subject, MSI aims for research and educational outcomes of the highest quality.  The Institute comprises approximately 52 academics and eight professional staff members and is located in a new modern, sustainable, award winning building with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.  The MSI has research strengths in a broad range of areas, including algebraic geometry, representation theory, number theory, algebraic and geometric topology, non-linear partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, geometric analysis, computational mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical physics and probability/stochastics.
The Institute offers a variety of courses and programs catering to undergraduate, Honours and postgraduate students. The ANU also offers two research-focused degrees for undergraduate mathematics students. The recently introduced Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences is expanding student numbers in the mathematics major, and the elite Bachelor of Philosophy degree attracts a significant number of the very best undergraduates. The MSI offers the most comprehensive undergraduate coursework offerings in mathematics in Australia and supports students through scholarships and prizes. The MSI currently teaches 1840 undergraduate coursework students, and there is a combined total of 91 students in the Honours, MSc, MPhil and PhD programs.
